    administration of opium is one drop of the tincture for each year of age ; but safe prescriptions will be given under the heading Narcotics. With regard to Sex, women, as a rule, require smaller doses than men, and this is especially the case with regard to purgatives; powerful cathartics, from the straining they cause, may give rise to displacement of the pelvic organs, and during pregnancy, to abortion. The Temperaments and Idiosyn- crasies of individuals frequently seem to be outside the reign of all law, and can only be known by experiment, but the effects of habit are better understood. Indulgence in alcohol, opium, and in arsenic eating, renders the system, of those ,who so indulge, so tolerant of their action, that doses poisonous when ad- ministered to others have little or no effect on them.
