![Of the 164 deaths from respiratory tuberculosis during 1929, 149 occurred in individuals between 15 and 65 years old—that is, of a svage-eaming age. This subject is further dealt with in the “ Tuberculosis ” section of this report. Deaths from epidemic diseases.—The seven “ principal epidemic- diseases ” caused 104 deaths, as follows:— Diarrhoea and enteritis (under 2 years) 34 Whooping cough 24 Measles 36 Scarlet fever 4 Diphtheria (including membranous croup) 3 “Fever” (enteric, typhus, and simple continued fever) 3 Smallpox 0 This corresponds to a death-rate from all these diseases of 0.66 per 1,000 of the population. Deaths from other notifiable infectious diseases—Pneumonia caused, in its various forms, 308 deaths; puerperal fever caused 2; encephalitis lethargica caused 9; erysipelas caused 6; acute polioencephalitis caused 1.
