A number of sieves are superposed one upon the other, so that 44 one sieve shall 44 rest upon the edge of another, and a vacant and convenient 44 space be left for the circulation of the gas,” or “a cylinder 44 provided with a sufficient number of holes,” and 44 placed in an 44 air-tight envelope or chamber,” is used. The cylinder put in motion 44 will allow the grain, while traversing the interior of the 44 cylinder from one end to the other, to receive the effect of the “ chlorine, which will escape by the lower part of the apparatus.” [Printed, 2}d.~] 1853. VION, Hippolyte Charles.—The title of this invention is as follows : 44 Certain improvements in apparatus for refrigerating and 44 apparati ” are partly described in the Provisional Specifica¬ tion, which are lengthily described in the Complete Specification. In the Provisional Specification the following are said to be 44 among the applications of this principle,” namely, the 44 separa- 44 tion of liquids from one another by the freezing of the liquids or 44 by the lowering of the temperature,” and 44 the production of 44 crystals from salts of soda, chloride of sodium, &c., &c.; the 44 precipitation of soluble blues; the purification of sea water by 44 precipitating its salt;” but no especial mention is made of 44 the 44 applications ” of this system to the preservation of food. But in the Complete Specification, among its 44 various applications,” it is said to be applicable to 44 the purification of wines, cyder, and beer, 44 and all liquids, by congealing a portion of the water which they 44 contain, the hydration of the sulphur, carbon, &c.” 44 For the 44 preservation of food by surrounding it with ice.” [Printed, Is. 6*eZ.] A.D. 1853, January 31.—N° 246.
