I told you in my firft Impreffion, that it was very probable that felf-intereft would prompt Mr. Daffy to calumniate me as an Impoftor and a Counter¬ feiter of his Drink3 and like Dianas Crafts-men, would not fcruple to vilifie another man (by whom his gain is pared off) to flitch up his own Reputation. And indeed I was not miftaken 5 but he hath done it fo pitifully, that all undemanding perfons admire at the fol¬ ly of it, efpecially that he fhould have no more wit than to confefs the Receit in his idle Pamphlet $ only he tells you what great altera¬ tions he hath made in it by his great Reading and Studies. A very wonderful thing! that fuch an illiterate Fellow fhould be able to add to fuch an Excellent Receit! Will not all perfons (land amazed at fuch a fiidden Met amorphous of Modulus into Medicus, of an Awl into an Urinal, knowing that Nemo repentefuit dociiffimus 3 but if this great Student have made any alteration, whether or no he hath not made it worfe, I leave others to judge. I fhall not further trouble my felf with his impertinencies, let him fay what he pleafes: For my own part, I am fo well known to mod perfons of Quality 5 and others of good Repute in the Countrey where I live, and by many worthy Citizens of London, that my Perfon is above the prejudice of any malicious or detra&ing Tongue, where I am known 5 and where I am not known, let the drink plead for it felf and me. And that which is called the Elixir Salutk^ that it 'is the fame with mine, I affirm $ and for the Truth thereof, I appeal to any judicious perfon who will but try them both, and I will abide by his impartial Cenfure. And there are feveral confiderable perfons al¬ ready both in the City and Country fb well fatisfied in it, that they have left off all others, and do now wholly flick to the ufe of mines and for others that through opinion or meer fanfie efleem any thing the better becaufe it is dearer (as fome fuch there may be) I fhall defire them but to try before they pafs Cenfure on me or my Cordial, which is but juft 3 otherwife they are but vain and raff] 3 but I hope I fhall not meet with many fuch 3 and if any do it through ignorance, I would have them remember the proverb, Ne fntor ul¬ tra crepidam 3 which, left thofo ignorant ones (if any fuch fhall be) fhould not underftand, it is in Englifh, Shooetnakgr, meddle not with any thing beyond your Lajl.
