About this work
Description
This programme, part 2 of 2 which were broadcasted on consecutive nights looks at people with common sleep disorders: Sian Williams presents five case stories of the most common sleep disorders. This time the two sleep experts (Kirstie Anderson; neurologist and Jason Ellis; psychologist) offer treatment regimes for each of the patients in their own homes. Paul has to wear a mask attached to a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. Sheila is told to improve the 'sleep hygiene' of her room; making the room quiet and cool. Gwen has chronic insomnia; she is told to go to bed at 2.00am and get up at 5.00am. Kathryn is a parasomniac; she has door and window alarms to stop her sleep walking. The final patient, Chris, is a shift worker who is regularly being banished to the sofa due to his snoring. He is provided with a mouth guard which realigns his jaw. It turns out to be a disaster as he feels he cannot breathe; the sleep therapists get him fitted for a top of the range device which will enable him to breathe through his mouth. Paul has an assessment (the equipment has a micro chip in which evaluates the quality of his breathing as well as and stopping him snoring) and finds he can drive again. Sheila is asked to readjust her bedtime to 15 minutes earlier.
