![The Borough Council have for many years granted a maximum of 30 hackney carriage licences, considered adequate in meeting the needs of the district. After full consideration, having in mind the increasing population of the Borough, the Counci] decided, in 1962, to increase the number of licences to 35. Before granting these licences, each vehicle was subjected to the usual detailed examination and certified as being roadworthy by the Consulting Engineers who were appointed ftnd paid by the Corporation, This arrangement of annual [inspections of hackney carriages, begun some years ago, has Dperated to great advantage in ensuring that licences were 'ranted only in respect of vehicles which were mechanically fit ^nd safe for public service, Hackney carriage proprietors tend to make frequent changes in order to keep their vehicles up to [late. Licences were granted in respect of 37 hackney carriage jrivers. As a measure of control designed to safeguard the public kach driver must satisfy the Council as to his medical fitness [o drive a hackney carriage, 262 visits were made in 1962 by the District Public Health Inspectors in connection with licensing, for the purpose of jxaraination of vehicles on the ranks, for cleanliness, and jenerally to check on the observance of the Byelaws, A few jomplaints were received alleging contraventions of the Byelaws jut upon investigation none was deemed to be of any substance, licensing of Game Dealers Seven licences were granted by the Corporation authorising jealers to buy and sell game, |egistries for Female Domestic Servants Although there are still three Female Domestic Servants’ jencies registered in the Borough, registration is a token only id the amount of business carried out in domestic servants Jgistration is apparently negligible. igistration of Dealers in Old Metal The same five premises are registered under the Public Jalth Amendment Act, 1907, four of them belonging to the one irm.
