![EAST GRINSTEAD URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL Report of the Medical Officer of Health for the Year 1959 TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE EAST GRINSTEAD URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for the year 1959. The Report is prepared as indicated in Ministry of Health Circular No. 1/60 dated 8th January, 1960. The Crude Death Rate is 13.43 as compared with 13.76 for 1958. The Standardised Death Rate is 11.42 as compared with 11.6 for England and Wales. The Standardised Death Rate is obtained by the application of a “comparability factor” making allowance for the age and sex distribution of the district for compjarison with England and Wales as a whole. The Infantile Mortahty Rate is 12.2 compared with nil for the previous year. (There were three deaths of infants under twelve months.) The Birth Rate is 16.42 compared with 15.48 in 1958. The Standardised Birth Rate is 15.93 compared with 16.5 for England and Wales. There were no deaths amongst children under two years of age from enteritis and none from maternal causes. There were no deaths from Scarlet Fever, Typhoid Fever, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough or Measles. For the thirteenth year in succession no case of diphtheria was notified. No cases of food poisoning were notified during the year. Diphtheria Immunisation and Vaccination against Smallpox. The administration of the vaccination and immunisation seiwice was centralised under the County Medical Officer of Health, at The County Hall, Lewes, with effect from 1st June, 1959. Information on the numbers immunised is therefore given by the County Medical Officer, and is shown on page 9 of the report. Housing. Slum Clearance. The following summary shov^s the state of the five-year programme at December 31st. The programme sulmiitted by the Council in Januarj’, 1956 included 103 unfit houses. 1.
