Whichever plan may be adopted, the annual expenditure would diminifh with the fup- preflion of contagion, and it may be hoped with a rapid progrefs. In a few years half the fum propofed would probably be fufficient; and in proportion as the meafures of police recommended lhall be enforced, that moiety may be further reduced. But who, that eftimates the wafte of ftrength, the bodily fufFerings, the mental afflidtion, the deflru61:ion of life, that contagion occafions, would object to the expence of its fupprefllon ? The enlightened friends of humanity, who have inftituted the firft houfe of recovery in Lon- don, have already, by their liberality and active exertions, demonltrated their convi^ion of the importance of the undertaking. The opulent inhabitants of the metropolis will, no doubt, witii their ufual beneficence, augment the funds already advanced, in proportion as they fhall be acquainted with the great benefit which may arife to mankind from fuch charitable donations.* It may be reafonably hoped that pariflies, when aware of the advantages, will readily pay what they now expend upon fever patients in their own habitations and in workhoufes, (where they ge- nerally linger, frequently die, and often fpread the difeafe) to a charity which arrefts its progrefs, and fupplies every means of recovery. A wife and benevolent minifter, who, in the higheft public fituation, is anxious for the prefer- vation and welfare of every branch of the com- munity, has already patronized the inRitution.
