    volume, entailed by my removal to Tübingen, made impossible the further close collaboration which such a work requires. Furthermore, in working up some of the “Grenzgebiete,” I discovered that I frequently lacked the detailed knowledge which is indispensable for an inclu¬ sive presentation of the subject. At the same time, I felt that I dared not omit important neighboring fields from my Operative Surgery which plans to be a faithful adviser in all fields of surgical procedure. In a time when textbooks on gynecology discuss stomach resection and the operations on the biliary tract, and when the operative works of otolaryngologists devote considerable space to brain surgery and the operations on the thyroid, the representatives of these fields could justly make a charge of deprecation of their art against an Operative Surgery which did not include a correspondingly broad treatment of the operations of their specialties. I therefore decided to give over extensive fields to independent elabora¬ tion. I am happy to have found in Messrs. Guleke of Jena, Kleinschmidt of Wiesbaden, Lautenschläger and W'agner of Berlin distinguished and well- known collaborators who will insure a pleasant surprise for the subscribers to the first volume who are awaiting the continuation of the work. Through this division of the material among several writers it will be possible to produce the whole of the Special Sections in a short time. The publisher, in spite of the present low economic status of our country and of the whole world, has placed no restrictions on the format of text or illustrations of the second volume of my Operative Surgery, so that the book can appear in a worthy and acceptable form. The work thereby testifies to the firm and unswerving faith in the future and in the rehabilitation of the German People. Martin Kirschner Tübingen
