In general, the stitches of the second suture line are also passed perpendicular to the line of incision (transverse suture), the needle entering about 6 mm. and emerging about 3 mm. from the first suture line. By means of the Lembert suture together with the preceding Albert suture there is effected a broad apposition of serous surfaces which seals the wound dependably. In addition, this suture affords a firm mechanical closure. The Lembert suture, if very carefully and closely applied, can, in case of inadequacy or absence of the Albert suture, take over the whole task of the latter in an emergency. But such a single-row suture (used routinely by Bier) is not sufficiently secure to make it possible to recommend closure with only
