    is a malady to which young people are moft liable*. Writers have fup- pofed, that the peculiar texture of the epiphyfes, or the ends of a bone* caufed them to be more liable to it, than their middle* or harder parts f : however, we know that the extremi^- ties of the cylindrical bones allow of a greater degree of expanhon than we commonly find to take place in the middle of a bone, and that, at firft, without marks of external caries.
