After a very light incidence of cholera during 1940 a severe epidemic followed during 1941 claiming 16,706 deaths as was forecasted. This was the highest mortality due to cholera recorded in any one year since 1931 during which year 18,578 cholera deaths were recorded. It was observed in the annual report of 1940 that studying the periodicity of epidemic waves of cholera from 1,900 to 1940 it appeared that the last wave had most probably reached its lowest mark in 1940 and that the natural trend of that wave was most likely to show an upward curve during the following year. This has come’ to be true. Owing to the late outbreak during 1940 cholera infection considerably persisted in December 1940 in the Districts of Sholapur, Ahmednagar, Poona and Nasik. This helped to keep up the infection during the early part of 1941 which spread to several other Districts and flared up during the favourable season— June and onwards. 67.
