![90. Deaths from Malaria in urban and rural areas.—High death-rates from malaria in urban areas were recorded in the towns of Prantij (10*80), Shendurni (ft* 79), Dakore (5*16), Nagardeole (4*67), Trimbak (3*98), Sirur (3*87^ Bhiwandi (3*83), Nasik (3*43), Bhagur (3*29), Poona Suburban (3*16) and Nandgaon (3*02) and in rural areas in the districts of Nasik (5*06), Poona (3*87), West Khandesh (3* 77), Dharwar (3*63) and East Khandesh (3*46). 91. Anti-malaria measures and touring Medical Officers.on Malaria Duty.—For the malaria Season only 9 Subordinate Medical Service Officers could be appointed by the Director of Public Health for the Government of Bombay to visit the villages in the most malarious parts of the Province and to treat cases of fevers found in them. They visited 2,064 villages, treated 37,971 persons for malaria and 22,595 for other . diseases and examined 31,004 children for enlarged spleen, out of which 12,04b (39 per cent.), were found to have enlarged spleen. The Anti- Malaria Medical Officers worked under the supervision and instructions of the Assistant Director of Public Health who also visited the malarious parts in their charges for investigation and inspection of measures. In the Centra] Registration District 502,474 five grain tablets and 536,850 two grain tablets of quinine, in the Southern Registration District 450,000 five grain and 821,500 two grain tablets and in the Northern Registration District 411,700 five grain and 514,260 two grain tablets were distributed. These were distributed through the Inspectors of Sanitation and Vaccination and Vaccinators, Malaria Medical Officers, Epidemic Medical Officers, Revenue authorities and Administrative' Officers of the School Boards. In the Central Registration District 149,871 Malaria patients were treated at the Civil Hospitals and Dispensaries. The Medical Officer in charge Yeravda Industrial School, examined 3,040 inmates of the school of which 349 were found with enlarged spleen. In the Northern Registration District 334,800 cases of malaria were treated in the Civil Hospitals and Dispensaries. In H 6 ^ ^ rocide was used for spraying as an anti-malaria measure by the Municipality. This method is also being employed in Pandharpur town. 92. Distribution of quinine.—During the period under report • Government sanctioned a granted of Rs. 1,00,000 for (1) free distribution of quinine, (2) Sale of quinine at Post/ Offices, and (3) sale of quinine Hydrochloride Treatments for the Province of Bombay and the grant was further increased to Rs. 1,31,200. Rs. T,31,218 were spent on purchase and manufacture of quinine tablets for free distribution, in supplying quinine tablets for sale at Post Offices and to certain officials and institutions on payment, and in preparing and supplying quinine hydrochloride tablets in the form of treatments. Quinine worth Rs. 34,046 was distributed free to the public through Revenue* and other Officials and the administrative officers of District School Boards.
