![Infant Mortality.—The number of Deaths of Children under one year was 80, equal to an Infant Mortality Rate of ii8 per 1000 Births, which is considerably less than that of 158 in 1897, and almost exactly equal to the average of the ten previous years. The following Table com])ares the above Rates with those of England and Wales, and with some of those for the Administrative County of Lancaster. The Death-rate from Phthisis Pulmonalis, or Consumption, was *87 per 1000, which is well below the average of D26 for the preceding ten years. That from Bronchitis, Pneumonia, and Pleurisy was i *96, also well below the average, which is 2-81. The rate from Influenza was *29, which is below the average of *38 for the eight years ending 1897.
