Folio. (No place, 1649). £6 6s On August 5, 1649, the Governor of Buenos Ayres, Don Jacinto de Laris, published a Statute making it unlawful for the Convents or Religious Communities to buy up the various estates in the neighbourhood, on the grounds that it prevented the entrance of the ordinary settlers, on whom the safety of the Province depended. In this present document the Bishop repudiates that Edict, as being contrary to the Ecclesiastical liberty, and beyond the due power of the Governor to authorize, and threaténs to have him excommunicated. It is interesting that the Governor had been particularly careful to arrange for the posting up, in various parts of Buenos Ayres, of each copy of his edict, to be carefully witnessed by several leading citizens.
