    OF THE MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT. 7 o the Chairman and Visitors of the Dorset County Asylum. Gentlemen, I beg respectfully to lay before you the usual Statistical Tables, with a short Report of the Asylum and its inmates. On the 1st of January, 1860, there were in the asylum 168 patients, viz., 77 males, and 91 females. During the year 25 males and 29 females have been admitted, 11 males and 21 females discharged, and 3 males and 6 females died. The whole number now belonging to the County, including 19 males and 52 females at Fisherton, is 252, viz., 107 males and 145 females, showing an increase on the year of 15 patients. No particular reason can be assigned for this large increase. The admissions have been of the usual character; many received with broken-down constitutions, and some sent merely to be taken care of till death removed them, requiring, in point of fact, simply care, cleanliness, and good liberal dietary. Amongst the admissions were 10 males removed from Fisherton, and 3 females from other asylums. The majority of these patients have been insane for many years, their re¬ covery therefore cannot be anticipated; this additional number of chronic cases render the per centage of recoveries rather less than usual.
