But already in 1767 he had a serious rival in the perso of a man named Price, who gave equestrian performances o: ' Dobney's Bowling Green', near the present Pentonvill1 Road, throughout the spring and summer. Sampson and Price were followed by Coningham ain Daniel Wildman, each of whom ran a separate circus. In the nineteenth century Astley's Circus was the circus The principal items on the programme were equestriar turns, but as the performances lasted from 7 till 12 p.m each evening, it was obviously impossible to confine them to equestrianism, and time was filled in with farces, rope walking, music, competitions, etc. Astley's Circus appears to have been a nice, homely place. Between turns the place was invaded by vendors of sausages, sweets and all sorts of other delicacies, while throughout the performance pickpockets were operating both in the auditorium and on the stage. The first female trapeze artiste, who called herself Azella, appeared in 1869 at the Holborn Amphitheatre. She was soon followed by others, and within a short time all the London music-halls had their female trapeze artistes. No people has such a long and eventful history of public entertainment and pastimes as the English.
