    light' and other erotic caricatures, mainly directed g ainst the immoralities of prominent personages. Gilray lo drew two flagellation scenes. One of these represents Loman flagellating a boy, with one girl holding the boy's ]L and another performing a most indecent act. By far the greatest interpreter of erotic subjects was 'homas Rowlandson. His greatness lay in the fact that he buld introduce an irresistible humour even into the most Ibscene scenes. In portraying the sexual act he would Iccompany it by certain secondary circumstances that iised the whole to an artistic level. However, in spite of fie fact that Rowlandson sometimes exaggerated the Jbscene element, he always remained natural and human, nd never ventured into the realm of sexual perversion. Of particular interest is Rowlandson's conception of the emale body. At first he drew his women after the ancient keek pattern, but later he combined bodies of Rubensian mplitude with small heads and delicate features, and small lands and feet. The following of Rowlandson's erotic drawings were •ublished by J. C. Hotten in 1872 in a collection entitled: Wetty Little Games for Young Ladies and Gentlemen. With L Hctures of Good Old English Sports and Pastimes. By T. Rowlandson, 1845. A few Copies only Printed for the Artist's fiends. The collection contains ten etchings: 1. 6 The Willing Fair, or any Way to Please.' This is an interior with a view of a garden, in which a young man is sitting with a half-naked, buxom girl. There are a few unprintable verses beneath the picture. 2. ' The Country Squire New Mounted.' This shows an almost entirely naked woman with a plume in her hair, and a country squire dressed only in a coat. Here again there is a verse, most of which is unprintable. TT [637]
