Yet enter in You'll find a fund of sweets begin. Pisanus Fraxi collected 107 erotic etchings by Rowlandson. Many specimens of Rowlandson's obscene etchings are pre- served at the British Museum. The following etchings are not only characteristic of Rowlandson's individual humour but also interesting from the point of view of the cultural history of his age: 3. 4 The Star Gazer.' A room, books and a globe on the floor. An old man in dressing-gown and slippers is watching through a telescope a man and woman disporting themselves in bed in an adjacent room, the door of which is ajar. 4. ' Carnival at Venice.' A street. A crowd of people forming a circle round a naked girl standing on all fours in a hoop. Another naked girl is passing the hat round. The onlookers are standing in obscene attitudes, while through three windows lascivious scenes are visible. At the end of the street a woman is kneeling in front of a quack, who is adminis- tering an enema. 6. ' Lady Hamilton's Postures.' This etching is described in an earlier chapter of the present work. 7. 4 French Dancers at a Morning Rehearsal.' Interior of a sort of barn. There are seven persons in various obscene or erotic attitudes. One man is sitting on a chamber pot. 13. ' Inquest of Matrons, or Trial for a Rape.' An interior. This drawing is in two parts.
