On the left, the court and the defendant with his solicitor are waiting for the result of the examination, which is being observed by an incredibly ugly old man through a half-open door. 17. ' Meditation Among the Tombs.' A churchyard. A fat person is reading prayers over a grave surrounded by a number of mourners. Beneath a window of the church a peasant and a woman are disporting themselves. The inscription reads: Life is a jest and all things show it, I thought so once, but now I know it. No. 18 of these etchings illustrates a fable by La Fontaine. It represents the interior of a cloister. An old nun is sitting in an armchair, surrounded by ten nuns with low-cut dresses in various attitudes. In front of them stands a young man dressed as a nun, and menacing the old nun in a peculiarly obscene manner. 19. ' Such things Are, Or a Peep into Kensington Gardens.' A most peculiar and bizarre composition. Several figures of grotesque aspect, some of them representing enormous phalli, are embracing in a most obscene manner. A young woman is running away, frightened. On a bench on the left, two phalli. 20. ' Lord Barrymore's Great Bottle Club.' An interior. Six couples sitting at a table in various attitudes. A naked girl with a punch-bowl in her hand is dancing on the table. The scene is one of drunkenness and debauchery. 23. Harlequine and Columbine, in an intimate tete-a-tete, are surprised by a Pierrot. 24. A strong man in the open street is balancing a vase in a most remarkable manner, while a woman is catch- ing pennies thrown from the windows in her raised skirt. A small devil is beating a tambourine and dancing with a trumpet, which is fixed in an obscene manner. [640]
