![the book, as volume and page numbers are marked on two of them. The portrait is marked ' Tristram Shandy' and represents the head of a priest, whose nose and upper lip are shaped like a phallus. The other drawings bear various titles, such as: ' Tom's had more gristle in it',' Right end of a woman', and 'A limb is soon broke in such encounters'. The period after 1830 produced few obscene drawings of artistic merit, but countless bad coloured lithographs, some of which were published separately, but the majority of which were included in numerous erotic publications. As regards quality, an album of twelve coloured lithographs attributed to H. K. Browne, an artist of considerable merit, was an exception. The album was entitled: The Pretty Girls of London; Their Little Love Affairs, Playful Doings, etc. ByJ.R. Adam, Esq., Depicted in Twelve Spirited Lithographic Drawings. By Quiz, from Designs by One of Themselves. Wm. Edwards, Importer of Parisian Novelties, 183, Fleet Street, London; and Paris. Price Twelve Shillings. These coloured lithographs are beautifully drawn and finely executed. Without being entirely obscene, they pro- duce a highly erotic effect. The titles are as follows: (1) ' The Ballet Girl' (On the Stage). (2) ' The Ballet Girl' (During the Interval). (3) 6 The Oyster Girl.' (4) ' Lady in a Box.' (5) ' The Waitress.' (6) ' The Fruit Seller.' (7) ' The Cigar Girl.' (8) 'The Chambermaid.' (9) 'The Servant Girl.' (10) ' The Sweetshop Girl.' (11) ' The Barmaid.' (12) £ The Children's Nurse.' In more recent times (1877) a series of obscene illustrations to Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure was prepared by a prominent artist, whom Pisanus Fraxi ranks with Hogarth.
