    in which his tests are given is not a matter of unimport¬ ance. The tests have been arranged in the order in which they are here described after long experimenta¬ tion. Any worker who may think fit to give this particu¬ lar scheme a trial, will do well, at least at first, to give the tests in the order here described. (a) Name of the King. Generally known. (6) How long has he been King ? Generally known within a year or so. (c) Who was King before him ? Fairly generally known, (d) If Edward VII is correctly given in the previous answer; Who came before King Edward ? This is seldom known. Of course it is twenty years since Queen Victoria’s death, and many of the subjects were unborn, or small children, at that time. (e) Who is the Prince of Wales ? It is generally known that the Prince is the King’s son, but only about half bring out the point that he is the eldest son. (f) Who is Prime Minister now ? So seldom known that the author has almost given up asking it. (g) What is a Prime Minister ? Practically never known, so given up. (h) When did the war begin ? Year almost always given correctly, and usually the month also. (*') What was the war about, how did it start, why did we go to war ? It is uncommon to get even a fairly intelligent answer. It seems to be a matter which the majority of subjects have never even considered. If pressed, most seem to have the idea that there was some personal quarrel between the King and the Kaiser, (j) Who were we fighting against ? Always known so far as Ger¬ many is concerned : the German menace appears to have been clearly understood. The allies of Germany are seldom known, (k) Who were our allies, who were fighting on our side ? France and Belgium usually given, the Australians often given, America hardly ever named. (/) What kind of ruler do they have in America, is he a king, or what do they call him ? That he is called a president is fairly often known, name very rarely
