![[ « ] PREFACE. TO deliver a Syftem of the Do&rines and Rules pro- per for directing the Practice of Phytic, is an under- taking that appears to me to be attended with great difficulty; and, after an experience of more than forty years in that practice, as well as aher much reading and reflection, it was with great diffidence that I ever entered upon fuch a work. It was, however, what feemed to be my dutv as a Profeflbr that induced me to make the attempt; and I was engaged in it by the fame fentiments that the illuftrious Dr. Boer- haave has exprefled in the following paffage of the Preface to his Inftitutions : Simul enim doctndo admotas cram fenji, propriorum cogitatorum explication docentem plus proficere, quam ft opus ab alio confcriptum inkrpretan fufapit. Sua quippe oplime wtdligit, Jua cuique qua; cateris placent, undc clarior fere dotlrina, atquc animata plerumque fcquitur oratio. Qui vero ftnfa alterius exponit, infclicius fxpznumero eadem ajfequitur; quumque fuo qui/que fenfu abundat, multa rcfu- tanda frequenter invenit, unde gravem frujlra laborcm aggra- vate nnnufque inatala diclione utitur, It is well known, that a Text-book is not only extremely ufeful, but neceffary to Students who are to hear Lectures ; and from the fame confederations that moved Dr. Boerhaave, I alfo wifhed to have one for myfelf; while at the fame time, from fome peculiar circumftances in my fituation, I had fome additi- onal inducements to undertake fuch a work. Before I was cflablifhed as a Profeflbr of the Pra£tic~ of Ph) fie in this Univerhty, I had been employed in giving Clinical Le&urea in the Royal Infirmary ; and upon that occafion had delivered, what, in my own opinion, feemed Vol. I.
