![Town Hall, Workington, September, 1943. To THE Mem LEHS OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND Maternity and Child Welfare Committee. Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I beg* to submit my Annual Report for the year 1942. The vital statistics are satisfactory, and the health of the community generally speaking has been well main¬ tained during the year. Compared with the previous year there has been a slight increase in the birth-rate, a decline in the genera] death rate and the infantile mortality rate. There was an increase in tlie number of cases of Diph¬ theria, but the type of infection was mild. Measles was present in epidemic form. The position with regard to housing accommodation continues to deteriorate—many families are living under very unsatisfactory conditions due to the lack of houses. I again record my appreciation of the efficient man¬ ner in which the members of the staff of the Public Health Department have carried out their duties. I am, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant , ROBERT W. MACPHERSON, m.d., cii.b., d.f.h., Medical Officer of Health.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30293364_0007.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
