![CHILD WELFARE. Three Clinics are held weekly for the weighing of children, whilst consultations concerning the health and feeding, together with general advice, are given to mothers. Treatment for ear, nose and throat conditions are now referred to the E.N.T. Hospital, Rye Hill, Newcastle. Treatment for defective vision is given at the Schools’ Clinic and facilities arc available for the provision of prescriptions for spectacles. Dr. K. M. Wliitc (deputy M.O.Hh 1 ]as, since the retirement in February, 1943, of Dr. J. McConnell, carried out the duties of Acting vScliools Medical Officer and has been assisted by Dr. Margaret B. Steel (Maternity and. Child Welfare Officer). At the Tynemouth Victoria Jubilee Infirmary, cases of Dental caries are also treated. Minor operative or any surgical treatment is also available at the Out-Patient Department of this Infirmary. CARE OF PREMATURE INFANTS. Out of a total number of 51 notified cases of prematurity, 38 were born in hospital, where facilities were available for their adequate care. CARE OF ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN. As in previous years special attention has been given by the Health Visiting staff to the close supervision of this class of children. In addition the Visitor of the Tynemouth Moral Welfare Association has devoted much time to the surveillance of homes where there are illegitimate children. PROMOTION OF CLEANLINESS AMONGST YOUNG CHILDREN. Special attention has been given by the Health Visitors and School Nurses to reduce the incidence of verminous conditions. Much work relating to disinfestation of children is carried out regularly at both the Schools Clinic and at the Maternity and Child Welfare Centre. HEALTH VISITING AND INFANT HYGIENE. 6,944 visits were made by the Health Visitors during the year, and a summar}^ of these visits is given below :— Infants under 1 year : First visits 1,218 ; Re-visits 1,819 ...
