    Jane (Infanta of Spain and Portugal)—continued. lifetime, for having ordered the death of the Camp Master Don Juan Osorio. : | Amongst the penalties was the forfeiture of a certain sum of money to the funds of Santa Cruzada, administered by the Bishop of Lugo as Commissary-General to that institution in Spain; but, with the death of Don Pedro de Mendoza, the embargo on his estate was raised, and his nephew and heir, Don Sancho de Benavides, of Linares, was permitted to enjoy the benefits bequeathed to him under the testator’s will. 653 JANE (INFANTA OF SPAIN AND OF PORTUGAL). With seal. £25 The signatory was a sister of Philip II of Spain and mother of King Sebastian of Portugal, and for some time after the abdication of the Emperor Charles V she administered the kingdom of Spain whilst Philip was away. In this letter she writes as from the King, and refers to the five years’ truce with the King of France, which the latter had _ violated during the first year, by ‘‘ sending troops to Flanders for the purpose of seizing a frontier town and doing all the harm he could ; for which reason “‘ J, the King, who had decided to come to these realms at the beginning of the present year principally on account of the affec- tion I have for them and know they have for me, it has been necessary to postpone our return and we have resolved to enter France in person, by way of the Flemish frontier, with a powerful army to inflict all possible damage on him, and by this means reduce him to effect a satisfactory peace.’’ In order to divert some of the Spanish troops, the King of France was sending some of his own soldiers to invade Navarre and Fuenterrabia, and the Emperor Charles V had expressed a wish to take part in that campaign in person as he was then in Spain. The Duke is therefore requested to bring all his resources of troops and arms to bear upon the defence of the Spanish realm. This great compaign resulted in a_ brilliant victory for the Spaniards at the famous battle of St. Quentin.
