Pipe wALO 4 Stu yinlizta March N.Y, £12 12s A very long and magnificent letter, apparently written to one of the “‘ sisters ’’ who had lately left the school of St. Cyr. It is full of the life there. Confiding all the personal and domestic troubles and _ difficulties of the establishment, and at the same time conveying some idea of the great affection and interest she felt for her protegées. (Trans.):—‘‘ Sister de Vallier has been received for her second year. Before our ‘Mother’ declares it I shall reprove her and all the others for not being religious ehough on this point. For there is no secret in what passes at the Assemblies: I was pained at what the ‘ Assistante’ told me .'. . the ‘ Correc- trices’ had been warned by the ‘ Assistante’ that they were tired of those serious assemblies and that they ought only to practise what is written. I held firm to the General rule that one must conduct oneself in a religious manner at all assemblies. . . The classes are going pretty well. . . For all this there is nothing but patience, it cannot be changed. . . . (Trans.) :—‘‘ I see, Madame, by your bearing towards the Dames of St. Louis, that all your communications will pass through my hands, I want to profit thereby. I have already stolen a treatise on humanity, which I could not send away without taking a copy of it, and I thought you would quite approve of this . . . Mme, de la Maisonfort is making great progress, she no longer sees anyone,*she no longer asks for books . . . Your instructions, Madame, do not divert our ‘ Dames’ from, their duty, may God shed his spirit upon them.’ Etc. 689 MAINTENON (FRANCOISE D’AUBIGNE, MARQUISE DE). AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (SIGNED WITH PARAPH) TO M. DE VILLETTE. 2pp., 4to. 14th August (1683). £6 10s Contradicting the rumour that Louis XIV. was carrying on a love intrigue. (Trans.) :—‘‘I am sending you back the document as you asked. [I think it is all right and I have signed it.
