    OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. 697 MARIE DE MEDICIS. LETTER SIGNED AND SUBSCRIBED TO HER MINISTER, THE DUC D’ESPERNON. 25005 OlIO: : Paris, 31st July, 1612. Countersigned by Philypeaux. £9 10s A long and very fine letter to her Minister, warning him to beware of the intrigues of the famous Protestant, Le Duc de Rohan, whom she believed to be using every influence against her government. Also referring to some dispatches she had received from various parts of the country on questions of local government. (Trans.) : —‘“‘ I understand that the Duc de Rohan continues in his wicked ways. It will be necessary to take every care that his designs and enter- prises and those of his party on our towns and other places, shall not in anyway succeed. I see the requests of the inhabitants of Zainton to you for a grant for the reparation of the walls of their town. When they present their request to specify why they desire the said grant it will be viewed as favourably as possible . We have made a resolution to send to the town of St. Jehan and the neighbour hood, a sieur de la Nanne and Chandieu of the court of Parliament of that town . ; to inform us of all the actions, proceedings and movements which have been made since the commencement of the present year until now, both by the Duc de Rohan and by others to the prejudice of our authority and to hear all the com- plaints and grievances to be made on one side and another.’’ LEtc., etc. 698 MARIE DE MEDICIS., DOCUMENT SIGNED. 2 pp., folio. 21st February, 1621. £4 10s Letters patent signed by Marie de Medici promising to repay her agent or his heirs the sum of 72,000 livres and granting him the liberty to assign or transfer this mortgage. Her commissioners are to estab- lish themselves in the house of M. Jehan de Berulles, 16 Rue des Cordelleries and all deeds, acts and exploits done there are to be of as much force and virtue as if done to the person of her Majesty. Signed on this side of the sheet— Potier, Armant, Duc de Nevers, Bouthillier, Poterre, Leconte; Dargouges. Thelypeaux. On the reverse is an order of Marie de Medici, given on 12th Feb- ruary, 1621, to transport to the Castle of theyLouvre everything bought from the heirs of M. Jehan de Berulles—for the payment of 72,000 livres. (Signed) MARIE.
