About this work

Description

Documentary following three people who, without cutting edge surgery and treatment at the Neurointensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, would have died due to devastating brain injuries. The work of the medical teams are shown in depth and the families' ethical and emotional journeys are covered. Richard was involved in a motorcycle accident and after spending 31 days in the Unit, the family had just decided to withdraw treatment when Professor Menon discovered eye movement responses to simple commands in Richard and the possibility arose for him to decide for himself between life and death. Mother of three, Beckii, suffered a severe head injury during a car accident, as did 18-year-old Sam. Both women are watched closely by staff in the unit and their families are shown waiting anxiously for them to wake up. Beckii achieves a state known as minimally conscious and continues to make slow progress, but Sam's brain continued to die and her family were forced into the decision to withdraw treatment. Meanwhile, speech therapist Rhiannon is working to communicate with Richard in order to ascertain how much brain function he has. He makes it clear that he doesn't want his treatment stopped.
