Dr. Goodhart has observed these facts, and attributes them to reduction of the whole blood- sapply as part of the general wasting, which is so conspicuous a feature. This probably plays some part in addition to efficient compensation. But there is still another reason. Children with severe heart- disease, as a rule, die from other causes before the stage of grave tricuspid leakage is reached. For in children the mode of death from mitral disease diffei’s from that we see in later life. Instead of engorged liver and lungs, with blueness, extreme dyspnoea, and general dropsy, there is rapid wast- ing, progressive aneemia, feebleness, and death from asthenia ratlmr than from the direct injury to the mechanism of circulation, unless it be the strangling grip of pericardial exudation and adhesion. Scarlatinal Rheumatism.—The account of the various phases of rheumatism would be incom- plete without some reference to the scarlatinal affec-’ tion. An articular inflammation appears now and aain in the course of scarlet fever, which can in no way be distinguished from that of acute rheumatism.
