    DEATHS. The important causes of death are shown in the Vital Statistics on page 7, and a detailed table follows on page 11. The number of deaths from cancer fell from 135 to 121, mainly due to a sharp drop in the number caused by cancer of the lung and bronchus, from 30 to 14. Only one of the cancer of the lung deaths occurred in a female. The number of deaths from respiratory diseases, excluding pulmonary tuberculosis, increased slightly, while deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis itself remained low. There were two deaths caused by influenza, and a small number caused by other infectious diseases (q.v., p.12). Deaths from vascular and heart diseases increased slightly from 394 to 405, and continued to account for more than half the total number of deaths. Road accidents only caused one death in 1956, but the number of deaths caused by accidents in the home and in factories increased from 6 to 10. The number of suicides fell from 13 to 7. The total number of deaths remained unchanged, being 759 in both 1955 and 1956. There has been little alteration in the proportion of the number of deaths caused by each group of diseases, as will be seen from the table on page 13.
