    PREFACE. The following paper from the pen of Dr. Edward Ballard, who holds the appointment of Medical Officer of Health to the Parish of Islington, was read before the Association of Medical Officers of Health at their ordinary meeting on November 19th. It was listened to with marked attention, and followed by an unani- mous burst of approval, and by a resolution to ask Dr. Ballard’s consent that it should be printed and circulated by the Association. The members present desired not only to express their own high sense of Dr. Ballard’s labours, but to let the public see what untiring industry in collecting the minutest facts, what sagacity in linking together the chain of evi- dence, had at length driven him to the irresistible conclusion that the blandest and most unsuspicious article of food had been, and might be again made the vehicle of propagation of a most terrible and fatal disease. They hope that the public may be ! induced to lay aside their usual apathy, and see the duty of interesting themselves in the wholesome- ness of the articles of food supplied to them, and of a 2
