![[It may be noted en passant that the Sulphur Bath may be safely given to elderly and invalid persons without fear of injurious consequences, if due precautions are observed—as, of course, in every case is more or less requisite.] Case VIIL—This may be said to resemble Case VI., inasmuch as the patient owed her complaint mainly to constitutional causes. The lady had been much abroad, in hot climates, and her family history gave evidence both to gout and rheumatism. The painful affection was, with her, confined to one joint, where it had settled persistently for seven or eight years. It was, however, completely overcome by a persevering course of Douche Baths, combined with an internal use of the water in small doses. Case IX.—A mother of a family, aged 42, is suddenly affected for the first time with what is de- scribed as ^'acute rheumatism in all the joints. She keeps her bed for three months; and then, shortly after rising, a relapse comes on, confining her again to bed ; from which she is unable to rise for six months. She is carried to Strathpeffer, unable to stand or walk. Many of the small joints of the hand are stiff. The knees and some other large joints are swollen, painful, and useless. Very little was attempted at the Spa be- yond carefully regulated drinking of the sulphur waters, but of these she came to take a large daily allowance.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b20393738_0111.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
