    useful to them... If no real use should arise from the following relation, it may at some future time afiord amusement to my daughters or my son, or perhaps to their children; and if I can do them no essen- tial service, which would be the highest gratifica- tion to my mind that it is capable of receiving, | am not so vain but I can think with pleasure of contri- buting to their amusement. Should they live, they will see what sort of a man I was. They will be- come acquainted with my views in life, my principles, my conduct, my success, my amusements, my con- nexions, and a variety of other circumstances which are usually known only to a man himself. I trust they will find two things proved in this narration ; that my intentions were good, and that I was not of a lazy disposition. Allow me to repeat what has often been asserted, that it is the interest of every man to be virtuous. Let me say that every man should be virtuous himself, and yet sufficiently guard- ed against the impositions of the vicious; and I am firmly persuaded, that there is no state into which the mind can fall which so effectually precludes all possibility of success in the world, and eventually leads men into such distress, both of body and mind, as the habit of idleness. It is with great justice said to be the root of all evil. ) I can hardly suspect myself to be influenced by vanity in writing this memoir ; at least if I am, I might complain of my disappointment, for that pas- sion could not be less gratified in any person than it is in me by an inquiry into the history of my family, or by every thing that I have heard of it.
