    TRANSLATORS PREFACE When Dr. Max Joseph requested me to prepare an English Version of bis book on Cosmetics, I feit that the profession in this country might be inclined to scoff at the subjects with which it deals ; but since then I have beoome convinced that there is a demand on the part of many practitioners for a fuller and more soientific knowledge of the hygiene of the skin and hair, and the treatment of their minor affections. There can be no doubt that at the present day much of the work which shonld fall to the lot of the medical man devolveS' upon such as the chiropodist, the barber, and the quack electrician, whilst those who invent and manufacture the various preparations for the hair which flood the market reap an abundant harvest also. vn
