![child, organic diseases of the kidney, prolap- sus of the bladder, rheumatism of the uterus. Diagnosis. True.—Commence at the lower part of the back first and extend down and in front, recur regularly, dilate os and pro- trude membranes. False.—Commence at fundus, extent limited, erratic, recur irregularly, do not dilate os. By all means insist on a vaginal examina- tion. It will save your time, anxiety, watch- ing, and even character. Treatment.—The bowels must be relieved before giving an opiate. For diarrhoea use ol. ricin. et T. opii. For rheumatism use laxatives and diaphoretics. C.l During the first stage of labor the obste- trician may institute two or three vaginal examinations, so as to ascertain the progress of the dilatation of the os uteri.* Frequent examinations, or attempts to dilate the vagina, will cause heat, pain, irritation, or inflammation, and unfit the vaginal canal for the office of parturition. During the first stage of labor, the practi- * M. Velpeau contends that three examinations are sufficient during the whole process of parturition. Some women expect to be exnmined during every pain, but fre- quent examinations will irritate the vagina, and do harm instead of good. [If the labor is progressing slowly examinations once an hour (by the watch, for impatience over-estimates time) will be all sufficient.
