    a morphogenous action on particular developments, hoping to conclude tri- umphantly that the entire series of morphogenous phenomena, constitut- ing the ontogenetic development, may be explained completely and exclu- sively by physico-chemical action. But in this attempt they have mistaken a mere release of morpho- genous activities already potentially in the developing embryo for a genuine morphogenous action. This could easily be proved if space permitted. But even if they should succeed in this task, they would still need to explain the purposive aspect of their long and complicated series of purely physico- chemical actions—a purposive aspect which physico-chemical processes never present in the natural inorganic world. In view of the facts examined in this second section, which so clearly dis- tinguish the generative and regenera- tive phenomena from all the phenomena of the natural inorganic world, one
