Nursing Homes and Nurses Agencies At the end of the year, there were 62 registered nursing homes in the County. Their 1,323 beds provided a substantial geriatric service, as over 90 per cent were occupied by elderly and infirm persons. There were no homes registered under the Abortion Act 1967. The homes were routinely visited by the Medical Inspector. Five com¬ plaints were received and these were investigated fully by the Inspector who visited both the complainants and the homes concerned. The general standard of nursing homes improved; many proprietors carried out redecorations and several built extensions to existing premises. The problems facing the homes were mainly rising costs and the difficulty of obtaining qualified nursing staff. The following table gives details of the registration of nursing homes in the County during the past five years.
