    CORONAL TON S26.27 JAMES I, 1603-1625 GILL (A.): LOGONOMIA ANGLICA, 1619—continued. Undoubtedly the copy given by the author to James I, to whom the work is dedicated. Milton was at St. Paul’s School from 1620 to 1625, and the above work was undoubtedly used by him in the course of his studies. The first edition, published in 1619, was evidently quickly exhausted, the actual edition Milton would have used was the second. Gill’s work, written in Latin, opens with suggestions for a phonetic system of English spelling by reviving the Anglo-Saxon signs for the two sounds of “th” and similar means. In his section on grammatical and rhetorical figures Gill quotes freely from Spenser, Wither, Daniel, and other English poets, with whose works he shows an intimate acquaintance. For Spenser he had a special affection, nearly all his examples being taken from the “ Faerie Queen.” ROYAL ARMS OF JAMES If. [27] BINDING. FOXE (John).
