    Charles [. 1625-1649 DEATH OF LOUIS XIII ‘’ PRINCES HAVE DEATH IN COMMON WITH OTHER MEN.” [44] LETTER SIGNED AND SUBSCRIBED TO THE PRINCE OF CONDE. | 1 page, folio. Oxford, 20th June, 1643. £15 158 See Illustration opposite. Referring to the death of Louis XIII of France. Charles I was embroiled in the Civil War at this time, and his words read somewhat prophetically. (T'rans.):—“ We feel very much regret at the loss we bear in the Royal person of the late very christian King our brother; but as we know Princes have death in common with other men, we yield to the Divine Will.” Etc. ‘DEFENCE OF READING. [45] AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY THE KING ADDRESSED TO “OUR TRUSTY WELBELOVED THE MALIOR -OF OUR TOWNE OF READINGE.” 1 page, folio. Dated from Reading the 22nd of November, 1642. £10 10s Dated from Reading just after the commencement of the Civil War. It reads :— “Our expresse pleasure and Comand is that you give instant order to all the inhabitants of our Towne of Readinge and espetially to the Laborers and other workmen of the same to attend the Cuartor Master Generall of our Army and to labor in the makeing Trenches and all other workes for the security of the Towne. Hereof you nor they are to fayle.” Charles I declared war at Nottingham 22 August, 1642, pushed aside the Parlia- mentary Army at Edgehill 23 October, a month later was at Reading, and the same month (November) advanced as far as Brentford, but withdrew to winter at Oxford.
