    0 presses it, of the part which it attacks* The principal features or peculiarities of inflammation in 1 one, or in ligament, are, the very slow and gradual manner in which it proceeds through its first stages, and the exceeding sensibility which is developed in the more advanced periods of its progress; so that an in¬ jury, as a fall, or bruise, which is the cause of a caries of the spine, and all its / consequences, may have been inflicted so long ago, as to have been never ad¬ verted to, or forgotten by the patient, till his attention is called to it by his surgeon. In some instances, even four or five years * have elapsed, between the injury and the accession of the palsy; and al¬ though the health has been all this time I may add, that the honour of it is due to our country¬ man, Dr. C. Smyth, who, in a paper in the Medical Communications, has laid down the principles of these distinctions, in a very clear and masterly manner. * See Dr. Jebb’s and Dr. Pierce’s Cases.
