![At the beginning’ of the year 13 Municipal Midwives were employed, one of these resigned and left the service in April, 1950. 1 Municipal Midwife attended a Post Graduate Course. Tlie Municipal Midwives attended 027 cases. Gas and Air Analgesia was ^dven in 385 cases. All the Municipal Midwives are trained in the administration of g-as and air analgesia and facilities are provided for the transport of the apparatus. None of the Independent Midwives are trained in the administration of gas and air analgesia, but 60 of tlie 121 cases attended ])y tliem were given an anaesthetic—a doctor being present at the birth. Of the 43 practising Midwives 28 were totally dependent on their practice for a living and 15 partially so. All the Midwives liold the C.M.B. Certificate, and 39 are also State Registered Nurses nnd 28 hold tlie Gas and Air Analgesia Certificate. The special arrangement with the C.M.B. whereby 1 of the Indepen- dent Midwives subsequent to the surrender of her C.M.B. Certificate had practised since 1942, came to an end in August, 1950. One midwife in private practice attended 161 cases, 1 juidwife attended 80 cases, 8 midwives attended over 50 cases, and 5 midwives attended less than 10 cases each.
