    [ *2 ] this, that the opiates which we ufe in this country', are fo duly prepared that they may be fafely ad- miniftered even to infants : and in fa£t, were it not for thefe valuable medicines, we might aban¬ don every phyfical application in ail the hot di- feales of this country : which affirmation, though It may appear unwarrantable to the unexpe¬ rienced in fuch pra&ice, I am confident, on fu¬ ture obfervation, will be univerfaily acknowledg¬ ed to be juft *. & In regard to the regimen, it is a matter of no great importance : for the extreme violence, and Jl % # The unanimous teftimony of modern practitioners con¬ firms this affertion of our author ; the rectitude of which is fo clearly afcertained by experience, as to juftify the moil refolute and liberal prefcription of narcotic medicines that occurs in all phyfical difpenfation. Authentic cafes of the various fpafins are recorded, wherein a fcruple of opium has been adminiftered in the fpace of twenty four hours ; which, though it fufpended for a time, and a periodical repetition of it in the end overcame the difeafe, neither induced a ftupor, nor procured an uninterrupted deep of three hours. Mufk likewife has been joined to opium with great fuccels. And we are informed of a cafe of the opilfhotonos at Hailar Hofpital, where opium and camphire, laid to the feet, in- ftantly and repeatedly removed the fpafrn, which always returned with its former violence when the application was withdrawn.
