It is “ true that about the same time, Dr. Cullen “ and other physicians began to throw off the “ Boerhaavian yoke; but from the minute “ observation which Dr. Darwin has given “ of the laws of association, habits and pke- “ nomena of animal life, it is manifest that his “ system is the result of the operation of his “ own mind.” The only other record of his life in Edin- burgh which I possess is a letter to his friend Dr. Okes, of Exeter,* written shortly after the death of his father (1754), when he was twenty-three years old. It shows his sceptical frame of mind whilst he was quite a young man.
