    The illustrations from medieval medical manuscripts provide a brilliant picture of medical practice not only in the Middle Ages, but also in Ancient Greece and Rome, whence came, in somewhat degraded form, much of the medieval knowledge of medicine and surgery. This selection of 104 miniatures—18 in full colour—-represents a cross-section of the medieval medical illustrator's art in all its forthright objectivity. It reflects the breadth and depth of the healing art as practised in the Western world during the late medieval period, though indeed much of the practice here depicted persisted into the nineteenth century, notably cautery, bloodletting, herbal medicines and crude forms of surgery. Professor MacKinney devoted thirty years to the study of the medical manu scripts in all the great collections throughout Europe and the United States.
