About this work

Description

Eleven-year-old Hayley Okines has progeria, a rare genetic ageing disease. Following on from earlier documentaries about Hayley, this follows her as she travels to Boston to become a guinea pig for a potential new treatment, FTI. As the trial has to be conducted in private, the documentary consists of Hayley's family's own footage. When she returns to Bexhill-on-Sea, however, the side effects of the drug begin to show and Hayley has to take more medication to help her cope with them. As that drug trial ends, the offer of a new drug trial appears. Cell biologist, Dr Ian Kill, advises them and discusses the condition of progeria itself. Hayley decides to try out the drug. Meanwhile, Hayley starts secondary school, something that her family never thought she'd manage to do. Finally, Hayley is tested to see if the drugs have been effective
