    WERTISEMENT / , TO THE EDINBURGH EDITION. J_ HE corre&ion of this volume for the prefs was un- dertaken at the defire of the Publifhers. Having already under- gone three editions, the prefent Editor believed, that a careful perufal of the proof-flieets, and attention to the typographical accuracy of the work, would chiefly conflitute his fhare in the publication. On collating, however, the laft edition with the original of Haller, it appeared, that few fentences, and fcarce*- ly one paragraph, conveyed the true meaning of the Author, In many places, the fenfe was totally miftaken, fometimes per- verted, and the omiflions and interpolations were both fo nu-4 merous, and fo prejudicial to the work, that thofe who have formed their opinion of the value of Haller's Firft Lines, from any tranflation in the Englifh language, muft have form- ed an opinion of them, highly detrimental to the well deferred reputation of the Author. In the prefent edition, with much labour, the Editor has endeavoured to corred thefe miftakes, to fupp'ly ivhat was omitted, and to expunge the interpolations ; in Ihort, to give Haller's Firft Lines in Englifh. The very great deviations made by the original Tranflator from the meaning of the Author, have betrayed the prefent Editor into an oppofite fault, that of making his edition more literal than perhaps is confident with the true idiom of the Englifh language. For this imperfection he has no other apol- ogy to offer : but for the omiffion of Dr. Wrisberg's Notes, one is neceffary. Of thefe notes, many are excellent; but as moft of them are literary, fome controversial, and others but add a new conjecture upon points not yet underftood, and, final- ly, as they do not now fulfil their original intention of fupply- ing every difcovery made in Phyfiology fince Haller's time, it was thought proper not to increafe the fize and price of the volume by their infertion.
