![Fine specimens of the chief woods of Egypt are shown in the collection of Egyptian raw produce; the specimens are very good, and their interest is still further increased hy their being accompanied by some of the agricultural and other implements made from them. The woods shown are :— 1. Acacia. 2. Alizier wood. 3. Azaderak. 4. Date. 5. Doum palm. Cucifera Thebaica. 6. Ebony of Sennar. 7. Sweet palm. 8. Sycamore. Ficus sycamorus. The Bois de Nahh, a hard dark-coloured wood, resembling ebony, appears likely to be useful. The acacia wood also seems to be a useful durable wood. A highly-valuable collection of the woods of Algeria is shown in the Algerian department of the French collections (see p. 165). These specimens are remark- able for their beauty, and for the good and instructive manner m which they are exhibited. Some of them are rather small, but in all cases they are characteristic • and well selected. Some of the woods are comparatively new to this country. 1. Tbuya-articul6, an ever- green tree. 2. Close grain,bard, beart-wood (duramen), bright cbesnut coloured, resinous ; recent layers (alburnum) cream-yellow. Tbis wood is supposed by some to be the sandal-wood of the ancients. Pinus Pinea, 6 X 2^ X I j- Specimen from a young tree, in bark ; a resinous wood. Cupressus, sp. 1 6 X X 2j; in bark ; a resinous wood. Paliums ? 6 X 4 x 2,i; an exceedingly soft, light, weak wood; in bark. (Palma Cbristi, or Christ’s thorn). Zizipbus, sjD. 6x5x2. An exceedingly close, fine-grained wood, heavy ; heart bright red cbesnut, recent layers pale ocbreous ; in bark. Abius, 6x9x2; a light, though fine, and close-grained, soft weak wood, of an uniform reddish-yellow throughout; in bark. Pinus maritima ? 6 x 8 X 2, in bark ; a resinous wood. Salix fragilis ? 6 X H X Ik in bark ; a soft and weak wood. Juniperus Phccnicea 18x5x2. This specimen was cut from a portion of a tree having a diameter of about 9 inches only; in bark ; fi om Zeralda. Cupressus, sju, 9j X 4 X 2, from a tree 1 metre in diameter; from the environs of Bledah. Rhus, sp., 9s X 4 X 2. Wood heavy ; its longitudinal section exhibits numerous open cells ; in bai’k. Zizi^finis, SJ5., 6 X 1 X 1 ; in bark ; a hard wood. PbiUyrea, sit., 6 X 5j X 2; a close-grained, hard, and heavy wood. Pistacia, s])., 8x5x2^; a hard, heavy wood ; from Mazafran. ? 8 X 5[ X 2 ; a tree, a metre in diameter, from Edough. ? 6j X 2 X 2. Wood fine, close-grained, hard.
