No text description is available for this image![Housing Accommodation. No action was taken under Part I. of tlie Housing of the Working Classes Act. Under Part II. tlie 14 liouses reported in igo8 as being unfit for liuman liahitation were closed during igog. A house to house visitation was made in different parts of tlie district during the year. A considerable number of houses were found to be unsanitary, owing to their damp and dilapidated con¬ dition, the want of proper conveniences, the unsanitary surroundings or other sanitary defects, or one or more of these causes. 36 of the houses were repot ted as unfit for human habitation, these are being dealt with. 22 other houses found in an unsanitary condition were voluntaiily closed by the owneis. The consideration of other ]uoperty inspected was deferred until it could be dealt with under the Houses of the Working Classes Act, as amended by the Housing Town Planning, &c.. Act. Part HI of the Housing of the Working (fiasses Act has not been adopted. In addition to the action taken under the Housing of the Working Classes Act a large amount of woi k was done and many sanitary improvements weie carried out under the 1875 and other Public Health Acts. Details of these will be found in Mr. Smith’s report, page 37. Part HI of the Public Health Acts Amendment Act, igoy, has not been put in force in the Disti ict for the reason that the Council had already obtained by their private Act of 1904 provisions similar to those contained in the said Act. No action has been taken under the Council’s private Act towards the convei sion of privies to the Water Cai riage System. Considerable progiess has, however, been made in this work during the past and previous five yeais, action, wliere necessary, being taken under Section 36 of the P. H. Act, 1875. During 1909. 357 Water (,’loset.s were substituted for 232 piivies, this with the number of conversions carried out since 1904 gives a total of 1,298 Water Closets substituted for privies.
