    PREFACE. The New Town Dispensary being supported solely by the benevolence of private individuals, it becomes the duty, and has always been the aim, of its Medical Officers, to practise the utmost economy, consistent with the double purpose, of affording efficient Medical assistance to an immense number of individuals, whose poverty precludes their obtaining it otherwise than gratuitously, and of allowing to Students under their guidance, extensive op¬ portunities of acquiring valuable professional knowledge ; economy has been their object, more especially in the Apothecary’s department, in which the largest expendi¬ ture is necessarily incurred. To enable their Pupils to comply with their economical views, to give them an accurate knowledge of the Medi¬ cines they have at command, and to save the loss of time, often of the utmost consequence to the patient, which must be incurred by ordering Aledicines that are not readily obtained, are the objects held in view in publishing the following Catalogue, which, it is hoped, will be found sufficiently ample and varied for all ordinary occurrences.
